Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization has
been open since 2008. The building has been formerly used as a traditional souq .
His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, ruler of Sharjah opened the
museum on 5 June 2008. This state-of-the art cultural museum hosts more than
5000 art pieces that are collected from around the globe. The museum
contains 3 floors each serve a purpose. The first floor is divided into two
long lounges; one is devoted to the Islamic Faith, and contains a gallery for special
exhibitions, the second lounge is for Science and Innovation of Muslims, The
second floor is devoted for Islamic Arts, and has 4 galleries that you can
visit it to learn about the artistic achievements of its calligraphers and
artisans. The last floor is The Dome, Domes
have a long history in Islamic architecture and even in the early Islamic
period, their interiors, found in palaces and bathhouses were often decorated
with celestial maps, so the Dome of the museum continues a time-honored
tradition, it also has a cafe shop and the most beautiful, and the largest
artistic piece in the whole museum, it is the dome itself
that is a visualization of the horoscopes characters.
Jameel Prize 3
One of the most famous temporary exhibitions that the museum holds is Jameel's Prize 3. Jameel's Prize is is an award for contemporary art and design inspired by islamic traditions. The Prize was inaugurated by the V&A in 2009 with partnership with Art Jameel. Currently Jameel Prize has the largest amount of submissions to date from all over the world. Jameel Prize ten finalist work is exhibited in the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization for the public to view, their work is a collection of diverse categories in media and art, ranging from Arabic typography and calligraphy to fashion, and from video installation to delicate drawings and colorful subject.
